Cloud Hosting vs Apps Hosting

Bernard Golden explains why some companies think cloud computing is the same as Hosting 2.0.  They are running into problems putting apps on platforms like Amazon.  Stating “cloud scalability isn’t the same as application scalability, and unless you architect a cloud app, you aren’t going to garner the benefits of cloud computing. In our workshops, we phrase this as “build cloud apps, not apps in the cloud.”

Here are 4 of his reasons:

1. Applications are installed on Amazon Machine Images and run just fine, but if the EC2 instance crashes or needs to be terminated, the app is out of commission until a new instance comes on line.

2. If an EC2 instances gets overloaded, there’s no way to add more resources to improve app performance.

3. No way exists to update the application without taking it completely offline.

4. Performance gets bottle necked by the database, but there’s no manageable way to move to database replication.

Application hosting is going to be huge in the future and having a system that can support iPad and iPhone applications without the bottleneck will be very valuable.  Scalable iPad Hosting and scalable iPhone Hosting application is the wave of the future.  You can read all about Bernard Golden and everything he talked about apps hosting and cloud hosting.

40% of iPad Users Own iPhone

ipad user study

Apple announced last Thursday that 450,000 iPads had been sold since arriving in stores the prior Saturday. So who are these early adopters? Not surprisingly, they look a lot like iPhone owners. In fact, 43% already have iPhones and nearly half (48.7%) own iPod touch devices, according to a new iPad user survey from iPhone- and iPad-centric mobile ad network AdColony.

AdColony also found out that that 44.3% have a household income level of $100,000 or more and 58% have bachelor’s or graduate or other professional degrees. More than two-thirds (65.5%) are male, and 34.5% are female. The fact that more than 4 in 10 iPad buyers to date have incomes over 100,000 is stunning and could be huge. To be able to put an application in-front of these people has the potential to be huge and very lucrative. To be able to have iPad application that is hosted by a powerful source of these simple applications will be the next step in the future.  iPad Hosting is something that a lot of these companies will have to look into!
