Apple announced last Thursday that 450,000 iPads had been sold since arriving in stores the prior Saturday. So who are these early adopters? Not surprisingly, they look a lot like iPhone owners. In fact, 43% already have iPhones and nearly half (48.7%) own iPod touch devices, according to a new iPad user survey from iPhone- and iPad-centric mobile ad network AdColony.

AdColony also found out that that 44.3% have a household income level of $100,000 or more and 58% have bachelor’s or graduate or other professional degrees. More than two-thirds (65.5%) are male, and 34.5% are female. The fact that more than 4 in 10 iPad buyers to date have incomes over 100,000 is stunning and could be huge. To be able to put an application in-front of these people has the potential to be huge and very lucrative. Google says its Web-based apps are now much easier to navigate on the iPad, such as Gmail, which was recently optimized for iPad as well. Google says it is also working on improving its application to take advantage of iPad-specific features. However, Google did not specify which iPad features it wanted to exploit or when the next version of its iPad-optimized search application would be coming out.

Given Google’s preference for Web apps and cloud-based services, such as iPad hosting.  It’s likely that any further tweaks to Google’s iPad services will be focused on better Web applications as opposed to improving its downloadable programs for the  iPad and iPhone.

Though Google is doing this, Bing has an iPhone application that is usable on the iPad. Microsoft does not have anything that is specifically for the iPad.  I think that they are already in the process.
